Major Breakthrough in Air-Jet Vortex Spinning Slub Yarn Technology Opens New Path for Novel Spinning Applications

On July 21, 2025, the China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) organized an appraisal meeting in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, for the scientific and technological achievement of the project "Key Technology R&D and Application of Air-Jet Vortex Spinning Slub Yarn". This project was jointly completed by Wujiang Jingyi Special Fiber Co., Ltd., Donghua University, Jiangnan University, Hangzhou Qingyuansheng Textile Technology Co., Ltd., and Suzhou Jingzheng New Material Technology Co., Ltd. The appraisal committee concluded that the project's achievements have reached the internationally leading level. A brief introduction to the project's research findings is as follows:

I. This project was jointly completed by Wujiang Jingyi Special Fiber Co., Ltd., Donghua University, Jiangnan University, Hangzhou Qingyuansheng Textile Technology Co., Ltd., and Suzhou Jingzheng New Material Technology Co., Ltd. The appraisal committee concluded that the project's achievements have reached the internationally leading level. A brief introduction to the project's research findings is as follows:

 Air-jet vortex spinning, as one of the fastest-growing new spinning technologies in recent years, has gradually gained market recognition and promotion due to its advantages of high speed, short process, small footprint, and low labor requirements. Statistics show that the installed base of air-jet vortex spinning equipment in China has exceeded 450,000 spindles. Although the range of suitable raw materials and yarn counts for air-jet vortex spinning continues to expand, and significant progress has been made in functional yarns, colored spun yarns, multi-component blended yarns, and core-spun yarns, producing slub yarns on air-jet vortex spinning equipment faced technical bottlenecks and had not yet achieved industrialization. Against this backdrop, the project proposed an entirely new technical route for air-jet vortex spinning slub yarn, opening up a new development track for air-jet vortex spinning.

II. Main Innovations of the Project

1. Developed a dedicated core yarn for air-jet vortex spinning slub yarn. By designing key components such as a traversing mechanism, a bulking mechanism, and a dedicated nozzle, a core yarn forming device was developed. Through the coordinated action of mechanisms and the control system, effective control of tension and morphology during the core yarn preparation process was achieved.

2. Developed integrated differential carding and drawing technology. Researched high cylinder-taker-in linear speed ratio carding technology, effectively transferring fibers, reducing neps and short fibers; designed novel drawing technology and processes specifically to effectively balance reducing neps, improving fiber straightness, and enhancing yarn evenness.

Developed dedicated spinning spindles and nozzles for air-jet vortex spinning slub yarn. Designed and developed specially sized spindles and nozzles, increasing compressed air jet volume to enhance wrapping and twisting effects; designed and adopted dual conditioning technology and dedicated devices, improving yarn quality.

III. Project Industrialization and Application Status

The project has achieved industrial application, forming an annual production capacity of 9,600 tons of air-jet vortex spinning slub yarn. It has successfully developed 12 series of air-jet vortex spinning slub yarn products and created over 10 series of fabrics. Fabrics made from the project's yarns have unique styles and have been used in end products like apparel. Customer feedback is positive, indicating good economic and social benefits.

  • Wujiang Jingyi Special Fiber Co., Ltd. is the Chairman Unit of the Air-Jet Vortex Spinning      Branch of the China Cotton Textile Association and a National High-Tech      Enterprise.
